Artist statement
Jade Séguéla’s paintings draw from fantasy and
iconography to evoke enchanted alternate worlds. Playing with vibrant jewel
tones, non-memetic colors, and strong contrasts, her works center around passing
of time, dreams, and spiritual connection, emoting protection and care.Executed with the technique of glazing with oil paint, her self-taught practice is inspired by Renaissance art in both method and form. Surrealistic elements often occur, though in the service of meaning and metaphor, generating an aura of mystery and symbolism. In subject matter, however, the work is firmly anchored in collective cultural memory (history, folklore, myths, and tales). On a deeper level, the artworks are visual altars of the artist’s own psyche by transposing emotions she experiences. Revolving around themes like femininity, faith, wisdom, and consciousness, she typically depicts whimsical characters and creatures in celestial scenes. Usually in a circular or mirrored composition, Séguéla’s figures are enveloped in vast ethereal atmosphere, where they come together in acts of intimacy, meditation and pondering.
Caught up in the cogs of modern life, it’s in an intuitive and playful process that Jade Séguéla records the act of creating to follow along the heritage of figuration. Meaning and beauty are the twin impulses expressed in the work, with neither sacrificed to the other.
